I spent a worthwhile afternoon yesterday at Patricia O’Reilly’s Successful Editing workshop. When you spend several weeks each year proofreading non-fiction material for an anthology you can get lost in the grammar points. It was good to be reminded that when editing your own fiction you need to look at the overall structure of the work. Believable characters and setting, effective dialogue and plot, and powerful sentences are what bring a story alive. I will keep the points we discussed in mind as I fine tune stories I’m working on.
